Part 1 Exercise 3 Nathan Coley

Exercise 3

  1. The artist I have chosen for this exercise is Nathan Coley.
This is a piece entitled ‘the lamp of sacrifice’, created in 2004 for The Fruitmarket Gallery.

  1.  A brief description:
This is a compilation of cardboard architecture, laid out across the floor in a seemingly hap-hazard way but what actually then looks like an entire city in itself. The colour of the cardboard is the same with every individual structure which adds to the idea of its being similar to a city skyline.

  1. How I relate to this work:
Generally, I find this artwork to be pleasing to the eye in a way a child is drawn to a doll house. The deeper, religious elements of the piece appeal to me in that the artist's opinion seems to say that all faiths tend to have a uniform connection in their temples of worship.

  1.  My thoughts on this exercise:
I actually found it very tricky to stay brief and to the point! But it did help me to narrow down the most prominent features and to differentiate between analysis and reflection.
