Part 2, Project 1: Exercise 2: 'Write a list of everything you've read, written, seen or heard in the last 24 hours'

A list of everything I have read, written, seen or heard in 24 hours:

  • Instagram posts

  • Instagram stories

  • Facebook posts

  • Children's cartoons

  • Toy adverts

  • Jeremy Vine news programme

  • Adverts

  • Messenger messages

  • Coursework texts

  • Text message

  • Daughter's music

  • Podcast: No Such Thing As A Fish

  • The 5 o'clock News

  • Emails

  • Series: episode 1 and 2 of 'The Bridge' on BBC iplayer

  • Music, assorted collection on a spotify playlist

How many stories are contained in the list?

There are stories contained in several of the media I listed, including:

  1. Instagram - various people's news and stories

  2. Facebook - friends and family's news

  3. Jeremy Vine show - various articles and stories from the day's news

  4. Music - some songs could be considered as telling a story.

  5. Podcast - No such thing as a fish is a factual based podcast that often includes various stories and associated facts from history.

  6. The News - The day's stories

  7. The Bridge - a fictional story being told through television

How much of what you've read/written/seen/heard would you consider to be art?

In a way, the majority of the list contains some element of art. Even on social media, I follow a lot of accounts that share art in the forms of painting, sketching, videos, quotes, speeches and poetry.

The more factual based media such as the news, morning television and podcast, contains less of an artistic aspect but when I really consider what's involved in the overall production of these shows, they do include elements of art for example, logos and graphics, music, staging, even makeup is done by makeup artists!

To me, music is most definitely an art form. Because it is a means of expression, through sound and lyrics though, in comparison to the other media, it's a far more obvious form of art. Similarly though, it does involve a lot of collaboration between different skill sets that all require an element of creativity.

The series I have been watching, a 'scandi noir' fictional tale called 'The Bridge', is again a combination of creative skills, however this is the only fictional work that I have in my list. So although it includes many of the previously listed examples, it has the added aspect of being a story created for entertainment. Though the series also approaches serious issues which, like many art forms, is a means of expressing an artist's views on serious matters.

Having reconsidered what I defined as art, I have been able to observe art in many more forms and I have become more aware of how much art is used and absorbed in our everyday lives.
